About Pediatric Eye Diseases

When we are born, the brain and the eye are both developed. However, the connections between the eye and brain are not formed until we begin to see light at birth. It is critical in the first few months and years of life that the visual input from the eyes is not only clear but balanced. When the visual pathways do not develop normally we call this condition amblyopia or "lazy eye". Once a child develops a lazy eye it is very difficult to treat. It is therefore very important for all parents to be aware if visual problems exist in their children and schedule an appointment with their eye care professional as soon as possible.
