Our Practice Strives to provide state of the art comprehensive medical and surgical eye care through the commitment of all our staff members. Our Ophthalmologists, Optometrists, Nurses, Ophthalmic Technicians, and Opticians provide excellent patient care and are supported by a dedicated team of office staff. Keith Mercer, M.D.

Professional Experience

  • Dr. Mercer has been practicing Comprehensive Ophthalmology in Grass Valley since 1981. He is an active staff member of Sierra Nevada Memorial Hospital and has served as both Chief of Surgery and Chief of Staff. He is also currently a staff member of Sierra Ambulatory Surgery Center LLC

Dr. Mercer and his wife have raised their two children in beautiful Nevada County. He has served as Board member of Sierra Adoption Services and Hospice of the Foothills. His wife, a former teacher, was active in the local schools while raising their kids. Dr. Mercers interests outside of Ophthalmology include traveling, golf, fine dining, and his Sacramento Kings.

  • Dr. Zealear began caring for the medical and surgical eye care needs of his patients in Grass Valley in 1987. He is currently an active staff member of Sierra Nevada Memorial Hospital, having served as Chief of Surgery.

Dr. Matthew Zealear began his Ophthalmology practice in 1987, when he joined Dr. James Hagele and Dr. Keith Mercer of Sierra View Medical Eye, Inc. He has the honor and great fortune to serve his patients in Grass Valley for the past twenty- three years. He has been married to his lovely wife for thirty-three years, raising three wonderful children. His interests outside of Ophthalmology include piano, photography, skiing, kayaking and hiking.

Dr. Hagele and his wife Lori have been married since 1991 and they are so proud of their two boys Matthew and Adam. Dr. Hagele is committed to excellence in eye care, getting to know his patients, and practicing whole patient care. He enjoys mountain biking, tennis, wood working, and charitable community involvement.

Mitra Ayazifar, M.D.

Eye Physician and Surgeon Cosmetic Laser and Oculofacial Surgery

Professional Experience

  • “Dr, Mitra” joined the Sierra View Medical Eye Family in September 2007. She performs Comprehensive Ophthalmology. Oculoplastics and Cosmetic eyelid surgeries in Grass Valley. She is currently on staff at the Sierra Ambulatory Surgery Center where the majority of her functional and cosmetic procedures are performed on an outpatient basis.
  • Prior to joining SVME, Dr. Ayazifar served as Clinical Assistant Professor of Surgery at Brown Medical School/Rhode Island Hospital Department of Ophthalmology and Staff Ophthalmologist at the Veterans Administration Medical Center in Providence, Rhode Island. She served as the Interim Residency Program Director at Rhode Island Hospital’s Department of Ophthalmology during the 2002-2003 academic year

Dr. Mitra Ayazifar began her ophthalmology practice as a clinical instructor in Ophthalmology upon graduation from the Brown Medical School Ophthalmology program. After teaching residents for several years and completing her fellowship in Oculofacial surgery, she made the move back to California along with her husband and two young children. She is known by her patients as “Dr. Mitra”. Her interests outside of Ophthalmology include running, biking, and spending lots of time with her family.

Kevin Woodburn, O.D.

Professional Experience

  • Dr. Woodburn began caring for patients as a clinical instructor at the University of the Pacific, School of Optometry in Forest Grove, Oregon. In 1981 he moved to Grass Valley and established his own private practice. In 1997 he joined Sierra View Medical Eye, Inc. Dr. Woodburn practices general optometry and has interests in low vision rehabilitation and contact lens care.

Dr. Woodburn and his wife, Ginny, enjoy living in Nevada County and feel very fortunate to have raised their two children in such a wonderful community. He is very proud to be associated with such a caring and professional group at Sierra View Medical Eye. He has also worked with some very supportive members in our community while a board member of Sierra Services for the Blind. Dr. Woodburn enjoys reading, hiking and is an avid sports fan.
